The University of Melbourne is seeking a candidate of an exceptional, world class calibre to lead the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (MDHS)
Fixed term- 5 years with possibility of renewal of a further 5 years
The Role
The University of Melbourne seeks a candidate of an exceptional, world class calibre to lead the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (MDHS). The Faculty is Australia’s pre-eminent medical, health sciences and biomedical faculty and is recognised for its research, teaching, training and policy leadership across all of these fields.
The Faculty employs more than 2,500 members of staff, attracts more than 8,300 students each year and comprises six schools; 37 departments, centres and institutes; and 160 courses. It contributes almost 50 per cent of all research conducted across the University.
The Faculty is Australia’s overall leader in clinical, pre-clinical and health sciences and is ranked 11th globally in 2021 by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. In the field of clinical medicine, the Academic Ranking of World Universities ranks the University of Melbourne as first in Australia and 13th in the world as at 2020. The University educates more health professionals, graduates, research and higher degree students and attracts more national competitive funding than any other Australian university.
The successful applicant will be both a distinguished Professor and a leader of immense and recognised international standing and experience. Able to lead, grow and inspire world class scholars and partners in clinical and research practices, the Dean will have the capacity and resolve to build deep and respected relationships with affiliated institutions to continue to drive local and global impact.
Relevant Experience and Qualifications
The successful applicant will have international standing and record of research and teaching achievements in a relevant field in medicine, dentistry or health sciences and recognition and international distinction in leading opinion on health and public policy practice. A visionary leader able to lead a complex faculty of the highest calibre academic and professional staff, they will have had deep experience in a world leading University across leadership of research and teaching, able to traverse the national and international landscape in research, teaching, clinical practice and engagement, and demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships across a diverse range of stakeholders nationally and internationally. They will be adept at navigating the complexity of the networks and impact as a leader able to not only lead the University’s largest faculty, but work across the sector.
