We're looking for a talented editor to join our newsroom in Jakarta for our coverage of environmental issues.

The Conversation Indonesia is a non-profit media organisation that produces and shares evidence-based news and analysis from academics and researchers on our online platform, social media channels, and through podcasts and email newsletters. All of our content is free to read and republish. We provide training for academics to increase their capacity to become a public voice. We share knowledge from the research sector to the public to improve public debate and to promote the use of evidence in policy making in Indonesia and the region.

Founded in 2017, we are part of a global network spread across five continents that provides a new journalism model, a unique collaboration between academics and journalists sustained through partnerships with the higher education and research sector, private philanthropy, governments, corporations and with support from readers.

Reporting to the executive editor and head of editorial, the environment editor will be responsible for our environmental coverage and participate in our activities to support the research sector.

This position is a fixed term of one year (with a three to six-month probation) with a possibility of extension.

Main Responsibilities:

Editorial

  • Produce high-quality research-based content sourced from academics and researchers on environmental issues, including but not limited to climate change, ocean health, fisheries management, deforestation, agriculture and land management, as well as biodiversity.
  • Monitor important issues of the day.
  • Build and maintain relationships with news sources in government, civil society, business, and other sectors.
  • Keep abreast of environment and conservation research.
  • Monitor content from other editions for translation to the Indonesian language, and ensure the quality of translations.

Audience development and engagement

  • Working with the current environment editor, manage a weekly environment newsletter
  • Collaborate with the multimedia producer and social media strategist in developing social media content, including videos and podcasts, as well as public discussions in environment issues, ensuring audience target are met
  • Build and engage with a community of The Conversation authors on environment and conservation issues

Research sector support

  • Participate in The Conversation Indonesia training services as trainer and mentor
  • Participate in The Conversation Indonesia’s content production services for partners

Technical

  • Carry out technical tasks that are needed to ensure successful implementation of The Conversation’s editorial strategy and objectives.
  • Carry out other ad hoc technical tasks requested by the executive editor and head of editorial to achieve The Conversation’s strategic objectives.

External relationship

  • Be an ambassador of The Conversation Indonesia, building and maintaining relationships with our partners in the research and higher education sector, government, business, philanthropy and civil society.

  • Presentation and training skills

The ideal candidate will have proven journalistic experience and experience in training and facilitation. The candidate preferably has five years of work experience and has a strong network in the environment and conservation research sector.
