Digital Editor at The Conversation AU, 8 month contract

Role: Digital Editor (maternity leave, 8 month contract, May 2020 -February 2022)

Salary: $110,000 per annum pro rata

Purpose of the Role:

The Conversation’s Digital Editor leads the newsroom’s audience development and online fundraising strategies. Reporting to the editor and working with a small team, you’ll be responsible for maintaining The Conversation’s onsite traffic, republication reads and reader donations growth.

The Conversation is an independent source of information, analysis and commentary from the university and research sector – written by acknowledged experts and delivered directly to the public. Our team of professional editors work with academic authors to make their wealth of knowledge and expertise accessible to all.

Audience tasks include:

  • Managing The Conversation’s audience team (social storytelling editor and deputy engagement editor)
  • Executing The Conversation’s 2021 Audience Development Strategy and ensuring KPIs are met
  • Working with external creative agencies and freelancers as part of The Conversation’s Audience Development Strategy
  • Leading work to build The Conversation’s newsletter subscriber list
  • Attending management meetings
  • Liasing with The Conversation’s editor and Chief-of-Staff to determine best content to showcase through social platforms
  • Meetings with republishers, university comms and marketing staff and other key stakeholders
  • Proofing social posts for tone, style and accuracy
  • Working with deputy engagement editor to promote brand messaging across platforms
  • Monthly audience meetings with The Conversation global network
  • Regular reporting to staff and stakeholders

Fundraising tasks include:

  • Managing The Conversation’s May-June donations online campaign
  • Creating a post-campaign analysis and use Google Analytics and Salesforce data to determine giving trends
  • Work with The Conversation’s Partnerships Manager to maintain relationship with donors
  • Implementing The Conversation’s December online mini-donations drive
  • Working with The Conversation’s Design Lead to improve user experience for donors.
  • Being across Australia’s donations landscape to ensure The Conversation is up to date with online giving trends.

This role will suit someone with a background in digital journalism who has a solid understanding of the ‘reader funnel’. You’ll have experienced the fast-paced, adaptability and expected high-standard for accuracy that a newsroom requires, while also having a first rate understanding of digital publishing. The role requires innovative thinking in ways to reach new audiences and increase engagement with current readers.

Key selection criteria:

You will be organised and able to prioritise competing demands in a fast-paced newsroom environment. Ideally, you will have experience in:

  • First class digital sub-editing skills (strong knowledge of SEO and social lingo)
  • Managing other people
  • Working with marketing and media buying agencies
  • Salesforce, Google Analytics, Data Studio, Facebook ads manager, Creator Studio
  • Online fundraising or working with a not-for-profit organisation

Plus:

  • Knowledge of public affairs and an interest in the news
  • High level of initiative and enthusiasm
