About the Faculty of Arts - Asia Institute

The Asia Institute is the University of Melbourne's key centre for studies in Asian languages, cultures and societies. The Institute's academic staff have an array of research interests and specialisations and strive to provide leadership in the study of the intellectual, legal, politico-economic, cultural and religious traditions and transformations of Asia and the Islamic world.

About the role

The Principal Tutor - Japanese will contribute to teaching excellence within the Japanese Studies discipline including the coordination of large subjects, preparation and conduct of lectures, tutorials and related assessment, and consultations with students. The incumbent will also be given some opportunity to contribute to the research outputs of the program, including research publications, conference papers and grant applications. The Principal Tutor - Japanese will receive ongoing mentoring in all aspects of an academic career.

The successful applicant will be a committed and engaging educator with the ability to teach at the Undergraduate level. They will have an appreciation of the discipline's subject matter and the capacity to undertake individual and collaborative research projects congruent with the direction of the discipline.

About you

You should have an undergraduate degree and a postgraduate level qualification in a relevant discipline, demonstrated understanding of the study of Japanese language, demonstrated track record of effective teaching and learning practices and a proven ability to develop educational resources, excellent written and oral communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to effectively work as a part of a small team and liaise with a wide range of people including staff, students, corporate and community groups, demonstrated skills in mentoring and supporting students and demonstrated skills in new media technologies in teaching.
