The School of Psychology is one of the largest and most prestigious schools in Australia. The School is located in the Faculty of Science and has approximately 50 full time members of academic staff, 15 general staff and an operating budget of over $12M.

The Lecturer/Senior Lecturer will strengthen the School of Psychology in the domain of language or psycholinguistics by pursuing scholarship and contributing to research, teaching, research supervision and administration.


About the role

  • Level B $107k - $126k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Level C $130k - $149k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • 5 year convertible tenure track (CTT)
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer reports to the Head of School and has direct reports research staff within the appointee's own research group.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

Lecturer (Level B)

  • The independent conduct of research in the domain of language or psycholinguistics.
  • Preparation and submission of applications for competitive research grants.
  • Preparation and submission of manuscripts to peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Presentation of research activities at seminars and scientific conferences.
  • Supervision of major honours or postgraduate research projects.
  • Initiation and development of course material, including the use and development of new teaching technologies.
  • Conduct of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching including the delivery of lectures and tutorial classes and the preparation of teaching materials.
  • Supervision of the program of study of honours students or of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
  • Consultation with students and academic advising.

Senior Lecturer (Level C)

The Duties of a Senior Lecturer include all of the duties of Lecturer at a more significant or leadership level.

  • Significant role in research projects including, where appropriate, leadership of a research team.
  • Lead the development of new course material in collaboration with other member of academic staff.
  • Broad administrative functions.
  • Attendance at departmental and/or faculty meetings and a major role in planning or committee work.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

Lecturer (Level B)

  • PhD in Psychology.
  • Significant record of research achievement in the psychology of language or psycholinguistics (including developmental studies of language), relative to opportunity.
  • Demonstrated potential to attract research funding.
  • Publications in international refereed journals.
  • Demonstrated ability for high quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Demonstrated capacity for high quality teaching and supervision at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to relevant Health and safety training.

Senior Lecturer (Level C)

In addition to the criteria for Lecturer, a Senior Lecturer will be expected to have:

  • Track record of significant involvement with profession and industry.
  • Strong publication and grant award record in relevant discipline.
  • Proven capacity to attract competitive external research funding in a sustained manner.
  • A track record of primary postgraduate research supervision to completion.
