Swinburne University of Technology’s School of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (ASSH) invites applications for the role of Department Chair, Education. We seek a senior academic in the discipline of Education to provide academic leadership for the department alongside contributing to broader leadership of the large and diverse School of ASSH and the Faculty of Health, Arts and Design at Swinburne.

The Department of Education at Swinburne University of Technology was established in 2017 as a separate entity within the Faculty of Health, Arts and Design. Underpinning all research, teaching and knowledge exchange activity in the Department of Education is a commitment to social justice and the desire to make a positive difference in the lives of individuals and groups in the communities we serve. This not only shapes the ethos in the Department but also its engagement with stakeholders such as students and professional partners.

The Department of Education hosts accredited degrees in Primary Teaching, Secondary Teaching and Early Childhood Teaching that are delivered online and on campus. It is the largest online provider of teacher education nationally, with approximately 5000 students enrolled via Swinburne Online. The department has strong connections to the teaching profession and is well known for its partnerships with industry as well as the production of impactful research in the areas of Teacher Professional Learning, Teacher Wellbeing, Citizenship Education, Sustainability and Environmental Education, and Information Technology.

The successful candidate will have an excellent track record of teaching and scholarship within the discipline of education, a detailed understanding of online delivery as well as a track record of successful leadership within teacher education. The appointee will also have in-depth knowledge about external professional accreditation requirements.

The appointee will make quality contributions to the research activities of the Department across income, publication, and engagement and impact measures. The 2018 ERA exercise assessed Swinburne as producing World Standard research in FoR code 1303 (Specialist Studies in Education).

Competitive candidates will have substantial academic leadership experience and demonstrated capacity to manage and further develop the breadth and depth of the Department’s academic staff and programs. The successful candidate will also initiate and lead high-profile international and external partnerships and projects with industry and community in addition to extending existing internal and external engagement projects across the department’s teaching and research portfolios.

The role is a three-year appointment with the possibility of renewal and is supported by an underpinning, ongoing, substantive Professorial position at Level E.
