Position overview The Australian National University (ANU) made a major and on-going investment in water research through its National Institute Grant to establish the Institute for Water Futures (IWF). The IWF brings together researchers in 10 water-related positions from across sciences, social sciences, humanities and public policy within the ANU and has established research partnerships with state and federal water agencies, and other research organisations. The IWF mission is to support sustainable water futures and to identify transformative, innovative and robust strategies to resolve the water challenges of today and tomorrow.

The IWF is seeking to recruit several highly motivated and capable early career water researchers from multiple disciplines and areas of expertise. The successful candidates will be expected to work in collaboration with ANU colleagues, research partners including Bureau of Meteorology, CSIRO, Geoscience Australia, Murray Darling Basin Authority, NSW Department of Industry Queensland Water Modelling Network, Atlas of living Australia and communities to effectively respond to real-world water challenges facing Australia and the Asia and Pacific regions. Working for the IWF , the successful candidates will be actively collaborating with key stakeholders and researchers as part of an inter-disciplinary water research team and will be effectively contributing to the research and teaching program at the IWF.

The IWF and the Fenner School of Environment & Society are seeking an outstanding advanced early- or mid-career academic with expertise in qualitative social research, futures thinking and/or scenario development; a good track record of interdisciplinarity in natural resource management areas; and ability to work collaboratively within and beyond academia. The successful applicant will be excited to join a dynamic, interdisciplinary and engaged team from across the ANU. We are seeking someone with a passion for research and teaching, understanding and developing relationships between research, policy and practice, and keen to establish a clear research agenda that is compatible with IWF directions and goals. Fenner School of Environment & Society, Hydrological modelling

Classification: Academic Level C

The IWF and the Fenner School of Environment & Society are seeking an exceptional early- or mid-career academic with expertise in hydrological modelling, to provide leadership in research and teaching in the area of spatial water resources observation, assimilation and hydrological system modelling and forecasting. The successful applicant will be instrumental in enabling inter-disciplinary collaborative teaching and research in hydrology and related areas, and developing the spatial modelling and data assimilation approaches to provide detailed understanding of water resources systems, real-time monitoring, and short-term to seasonal forecasting of water availability and use. Fenner School of Environment & Society, Integrated Assessment

Classification: Academic Level C

The IWF and the Fenner School of Environment & Society are seeking an early- or mid-career academic with outstanding expertise in model-based integrated assessment and decision support that is recognized internationally. The successful applicant will work closely with IWF partners, especially CSIRO, and be able to demonstrate substantial interdisciplinary leadership relevant to understanding and representing the complex interactions in biophysical-socioeconomic systems. Our ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about sharing their expertise through research and teaching, and will engage closely with a wide range of clients and stakeholders in the water and related sectors. Research School of Earth Science, Space geodesy analyst

Classification: Academic Level B or Level C

The IWF and the Research School of Earth Sciences seek an established advanced early- or mid-career researcher with proven expertise in the analysis of high-level space geodetic data and the development of software to perform the analysis, both for existing and future satellite missions. The successful candidate will be required to teach as well as develop software and analyse data from remote sensing missions (such as GRACE/GRACE Follow-On, SMOS, SMAP, SWOT etc) to generate quantitative estimates of mass transport and changes in water resources on Earth. Research School of Earth Science, Data assimilation analyst

Classification: Academic Level B or Level C

The IWF and the Research School of Earth Sciences seek an outstanding advanced early- or mid-career researcher with a demonstrable track record of incorporating observational data into numerical models that represent and track the transport of water in the Earth system. The successful candidate will engage in research and teaching, and have a strong background in data inversion and/or data assimilation (e.g. Kalman filtering), along with interest in, and a general understanding of, how ecosystems and other aspects of the climate system interact with the hydrosphere. There will be a future need to adapt existing models and practices to exploit new remote sensing data, as future missions become operational (e.g. SWOT). Our ideal candidate will work closely with other geodesists and hydrologists in the IWF to develop efficient processes for assimilating remotely sensed estimates of total water storage, soil moisture and surface water levels, and be keen to contribute to the broader, interdisciplinary goals.
