Announced by the Vice-Chancellor at the 2019 Garma Festival, the Indigenous Knowledge Institute (IKI) is the newest member of the University's portfolio of Melbourne Interdisciplinary Research Institutes (MIRI). IKI's mission is to work in partnership with Indigenous communities through local, regional and global networks to support and grow interdisciplinary research and engagement with Indigenous knowledge and strengthen Indigenous research capability. As a flagship institute of the University, the IKI will become a global leader and a gathering place for understanding, documenting and curating Indigenous knowledge in all its forms.
The Inaugural Director will lead the development of an Indigenous knowledge research agenda that attracts and facilitates interdisciplinary research across the University and beyond. They will actively engage with communities of Indigenous knowledge holders (at a local, regional and global level), government, industry, philanthropic organisations and academic staff to advance research and education in Indigenous knowledge systems.
A key leadership role, the Director IKI will report to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research). The Director will participate in decision making at the highest level and work closely with all Deans and Research Centre/Institute Directors to ensure that Indigenous knowledge is embedded into education and research across the University.
The appointee will have an accomplished record as a senior academic leader with relevant discipline expertise as well as highly developed communication skills and the capacity to influence effectively. They will have deep experience in Indigenous research and in working with, and having personal familiarity of, Indigenous communities, peak bodies, and formal and informal networks.
