Social and technological change has led to a need for fresh research perspectives on learning and teaching literacies across diverse education contexts, global literacy standards, the prevalence of digital media and new technologies in daily lives, and the continuing debates around balanced approaches to understanding literacy, digital media and pedagogy, curriculum and assessment. Literacy research investigates new theories and understandings, policy and practice contexts. The QUT Faculty of Education is looking for aspiring education researchers who are passionate about solving problems and finding real world solutions to join our Literacies, Language, Texts and Technologies Research Group through the QUT Annual Scholarship Round. Be supervised by our world-leading researchers, who work in critical ways to investigate issues related to literacies education across a diverse scope and contexts. The Literacies, Language, Texts and Technologies Research Group members are keen to engage with your ideas and proposals for research projects. Members are also particularly looking for research students interested in the following topics:

Literacy practices (early childhood, primary, secondary and vocational and higher education)

  • Reading and writing pedagogies, curriculum and assessment
  • Key literacies debates including those related to phonics teaching, comprehension and grammar
  • Content-area or curriculum literacies
  • School reform for improved literacy outcomes
  • Critical literacies
  • Language, literacy and the sociology of education
  • New literacies theories
  • Literature and e-literature for children and adolescents
  • Gender and literary
  • English curriculum, teaching and assessment

Digital literacies, media and multimodality

  • Visual culture and image theory
  • Media and digital arts
  • Mobile digital media
  • Literacies and artificial intelligence
  • Multiliteracies
  • Arts education
  • Social media and networks

Language and difference

  • Literacy and poverty
  • Minority or urban communities and literacies practices
  • Language, literacy and cultural identities
  • Transnational literacies
  • Intercultural language capacity
  • Private tutoring, supplementary education, outside school contexts for literacy learning
  • Critical language awareness and critical applied linguistics
  • Representations of diverse sexualities
  • Language and identities
  • Language testing and assessment

Scholarships Available:

Because scholarship numbers are limited, QUT conducts one highly competitive scholarship selection round each year. If you wish to be considered for a scholarship, you must apply for a research course before the closing date of the annual scholarship round, and indicate on your course application that you want to be considered for one of our main scholarships.
