The School of Sociology and the Fenner School of Environment and Society seeks to make a three year fixed term appointment for a lecturer in Environmental Social Science. We welcome applications from outstanding academics working in this field. Subfields are open, but applicants with expertise in either climate adaptation or human-animal studies will be particularly welcomed.

The successful applicant will have an outstanding record of or demonstrated potential for excellence in research and publication, and in education. They will be expected to carry out undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, to undertake research relevant to their field of expertise, to contribute to the supervision of Honours and PhD students and to work collegially with members of both schools. The expected teaching load is three courses a year. This position is based in Canberra.

The Research School of Social Sciences (RSSS) is Australia’s major institution for theoretical and empirical research in the social sciences. It is also a significant presence in the nation’s undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral training in the social sciences and has an international reputation for exceptional social science research. We are proud that we teach what we research.

We contribute to public debates in Australia and internationally across the whole social sciences spectrum. We convene workshops, public lectures, debates and roundtables that address issues of public and community importance, and these can be found in the websites of our individual schools and centres.

The Fenner School of Environment & Society (FSES) is unique in Australia and is among very few places in the world where researchers from physical, biological and social sciences work together on solutions to the big environmental challenges facing society. The School has a particularly strong record researching long-term environment and sustainability issues and challenges, and has extensive national and international networks with governments, NGOs, research organisations and the private sector, offering significant longitudinal expertise, knowledge and influence.
