The Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health & Society (ARCSHS) is one of La Trobe University's major research centres and a globally recognised multi-disciplinary centre of research excellence for over 25 years. In the most recent Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessment, the research outputs of ARCSHS received the highest rating of 5 - 'Outstanding performance well above world standard'. Staff and students within ARCSHS examine many aspects of sexuality, sexual health and the social dimensions of human relationships, and the Centre's major areas of research strength and interest include:

  • The health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) populations
  • Blood borne viruses & Sexually transmissible infections
  • Young people's sexual health and wellbeing
  • Gender, sexuality and social theory

About the position

ARCSHS is seeking to appoint two Early Career Researchers for one-year postdoctoral, research-only fellowships across any of ARCSHS's areas of sexuality research strength and interest. The appointees will be given the opportunity and mentorship to build their research profiles through the development of an original research project. They will be expected to publish in high quality peer-reviewed arenas. Research Fellows will also be expected to submit an application for either an ARC DECRA or NHMRC Investigator Grant for early career researchers within ARCSHS and administered through La Trobe University. In addition to publishing their own research in their chosen field, the Fellows will be encouraged to collaborate on publications and other research projects in the Centre.

Fellowships will commence from March 2019 and there will be the option for successful candidates of taking up the positions on either a full-time or pro-rata part-time basis.

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position, you will possess:

  • Award of PhD on or after 1 March 2015 in sociology, public health, psychology or other related social sciences and humanities fields.
  • A record of peer-reviewed publications and conference papers.
  • Experience in the analysis of data, including the capacity to integrate data from a range of sources.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with people from a diverse range of backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team in a cooperative and collegial manner.
  • Demonstrated high level of self-motivation and personal management skills.
