Research Fellow Applied Microbial Genomics

The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity is joint venture between The University of Melbourne and The Royal Melbourne Hospital, combining research, teaching, public health and reference laboratory services, diagnostic services and clinical care in infectious diseases and immunity.

Two suitably qualified research fellows are being sought to support and lead research that involves applying microbial genomics to elucidating transmission dynamics and emergence of virulence and antimicrobial resistance traits in bacterial skin pathogens. The incumbent will report to Doctor Mark Davies and Associate Professor Steven Tong and will work closely with other research groups at the Doherty Institute and the bioinformatics group at Doherty Applied Microbial Genomics located in the Microbiological Diagnostic Unit Public Health Laboratory. There will be opportunities to work with research groups based at the Menzies School of Health Research in northern Australia and Telethon Kids Institute in Western Australia. Our research combines genomic, epidemiological, modelling, and immunological approaches to understanding the disease burden and transmission of bacterial infectious diseases, with an aim to ultimately reduce the burden of disease.

The individuals will be skilled in the organization and analysis of genome sequence data in a Unix environment. The individual should have an understanding of microbiology and be a team player. It is expected that they will develop their research career pathway and be involved in the preparation of manuscripts and presentations reporting on research activity, assist with the development of funding submissions as indicated and contribute to supervision and mentoring within the Doherty Institute.

Additional opportunities for collaboration and skills development will be provided by the Doherty's leadership role in nationally distributed NHMRC funded Centres of Research Excellence (CREs). These included the CRE in Policy Relevant Infectious Diseases Simulation and Mathematical Modelling (www.prism.edu.au), the Australian Partnership for Preparedness Research on Infectious Disease Emergencies (APPRISE), and the NHMRC Northern Australia Tropical Disease Collaborative Research Program.
