About the School of Electrical, Mechanical and Infrastructure Engineering (EMI)
The School of EMI encompasses the Electrical, Mechanical, and Infrastructure Engineering Departments, recognising that engineered systems of present and future significance increasingly have connections to all three of these (and often beyond). Our vision is to translate excellence in engineering science into solutions that drive more rapid scientific research progress within EMI and, even more significantly, provide a strong foundation for external partnerships that improve quality of life locally, nationally and internationally. The Geotechnical Engineering Team has gone through significant growth and transformation with MSE making a substantial investment in new academic staff, new laboratory facilities and equipment in cutting edge areas such as geotechnical optic fibre sensing technology, geophysics, piling and energy geo-structures and pavement geotechnics.
We are now inviting outstanding research talent to work in our fast-growing active geotechnical engineering team. We're looking for Research Fellows who bring fresh ideas, who are versatile and display leadership qualities to take on new problems and have innovative solutions to solve the challenges our construction, energy and infrastructure sectors are currently faced with.
As the Research Fellow, you will work in a collaborative environment and be engaged in a range of federal and state government and industry funded projects such as use of concrete free footing technologies, development of fibre optic sensing technology for geotechnical engineering applications among others. You will work with external industry partners to develop and deliver research projects to meet technological requirements of our partners and are expected to contribute to 1-2 publications in high quality peer reviewed journals per year.
Along with your experimental research, we encourage you to share your passion with the next generation of engineering leaders. We will provide you with the opportunity for teaching post-graduate students, supervising RHD students and attending international and national conferences and workshops.
What you'll need
- PhD in Civil Engineering
- Demonstrated research experience in one or more of the following areas: Geotechnical Engineering in particular piling, numerical modelling, in situ instrumentation for piling and ground improvement works
- Advanced Laboratory testing including stress path triaxial, simple shear, use of PIV and Optic Fibre technologies
- A track record of quality research as evidenced by research publications in leading conferences and journals commensurate with opportunity
- Demonstrated ability to perform independent research and a commitment to interdisciplinary research
