About the team

The Research Associate will join the vibrant research group led by ARC Future Fellow Dr Heng Chooi as part of a multidisciplinary team working on the CRC-P project - BioAustralis: Toward the Future recently funded by the Australian Government under the Cooperative Research Centres Project (CRC-P) scheme.

This project aims to use cutting edge microbial genomics, synthetic biology and analytical chemistry tools to uncover bioactive metabolites from talented Australian microorganisms (bacteria and fungi). The project has strong academia-industry partnerships, which include The University of Western Australia, Macquarie University, Microbial Screening Technologiesand Advanced Veterinary Therapeutics.

About the opportunity

Under limited directions, as the Research Associate you will independently carry out research focused on harnessing the genomes of actinomycete bacteria for discovery of novel and lost antibiotics.

In this exciting quest to search for new antibiotics in Australian microbes, you will be expected to not only coordinate and conduct research experiments and interpret results, but also supervise and assist staff and students in laboratory skills, grant writing, publish papers to a high international standard and contribute to CRC-P milestones, reports and seminar presentations.

About you

With prior experience working with genetic manipulation of actinomycete bacteria, knowledge on microbial natural product biosynthesis logic and strategies for microbial genome mining of natural products; you will be a driven and collaborative post-doctoral scholar looking to advance your research career.

As a passionate researcher, you will also have the following:

  • Relevant degree and Ph.D. qualification in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry or related field
  • Good track record of discipline-specific first-author publication(s)
  • Well-developed organisational skills and ability to set priorities and to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently, show initiative and work productively as part of a team
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of safety issues relating to the use of laboratory equipment and chemicals

Desirable skills such as experience with microbial natural product analysis, isolation and structural elucidation, streptomyces heterologous biosynthetic pathway expression and expression, purification and assaying biosynthetic enzymes would be highly considered.
