Ph D Scholarship (Expressions Of Interest)

at University of Melbourne

The Indigenous Epidemiology and Health Unit, in the Centre for Epidemiology and Biostatistics is looking for a talented student to undertake a PhD focusing on the design, validation and evaluation of a psychometric measure to evaluate developmental outcomes in Australian Aboriginal children.

The Centre has one scholarship for an appropriately qualified student to commence research in 2018 in this exciting area.

The PhD opportunity is part of a collaboration between the University of Melbourne, Northern Territory (NT) Department of Education, NT Department of Health and Central Australian Aboriginal Congress Aboriginal Corporation (Congress) to design and lead research that makes a significant difference to Aboriginal children and families and ultimately leads to improved early childhood development outcomes.. The PhD research will include cultural adaptation of the Ages and Stages Questionnaire Inventory for use in Australian Aboriginal communities.

This study will require close collaboration with Aboriginal leaders, early childhood education specialists, child health practitioners, linguists and cultural experts in both urban and remote settings. Once developed, the study will then evaluate the adapted Inventory to confirm instrument content and face validity, concurrent validity and feasibility. Further research questions would be tailored with the candidate to suit the candidate and research team's areas of interest. The PhD research will involve adopting a mixed methods approach and will require field trips to remote Aboriginal communities across Australia for data collection. The project will suit candidates with undergraduate degrees in psychology or early childhood education or candidates with health/biomedical background and with solid experience in early childhood.
