The Department of Infectious Diseases is a recently established department of the Melbourne Medical School, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Sciences that is based at The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute). Research within the department encompasses infectious diseases including antimicrobial resistance and healthcare-associated infections, malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, influenza, viral hepatitis, sexually-transmitted infections, skin pathogens, and emerging infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Our researchers come from diverse backgrounds, including discovery research and basic scientists, clinician-researchers, epidemiologists, public health physicians, and microbiologists.
About the Role
The Department of Infectious Diseases based at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (the Doherty Institute) is seeking to appoint a highly motivated Research Assistant to join the Victorian Infectious Diseases Services (VIDS) to work on a clinical registry project. The Melbourne Health COVID-19 BIoGrid PlAtform (MEDIA) project (HREC 2020.385) aims to establish a registry of potential participants with a suspected or proven diagnosis of COVID-19 infection at Melbourne Health. BioGrid Australia, a data linkage platform will be used to ethically link and integrate clinical data and to manage researcher access under appropriate ethical clearance to various data repositories.
In a typical week at work, you may:
- Collect and clean data
- Recruit potential participants
- Manage databases associated with the patient recruitment process
- Independently plan and carry out project tasks accurately and reproducibly, focused on completion of research project aims to meet agreed timelines and milestones
- Work closely with supervisors and collaborators to ensure timely and efficient progress toward project aims
About You
You will be enthusiastic, with a strong interest in infectious diseases and data management. You will be supporting the research leads to manage project tasks such as ethics amendments, governance processes, and patient recruitment. You will work closely with the research data lead on the project to establish processes for data extraction and analysis. You will have exceptional organisational skills, possess the ability to work within a team atmosphere, and be a natural self-starter.
Ideally, you will further have:
- BSc (Honours) degree or equivalent with a major in data science, computer science, information technology, or related discipline
- Ability to work with senior researchers and help manage project tasks
- Ability to collect, validate, and analyse data
- Ability to work as a member of a research team and interact in a courteous and effective manner with academic, administrative and support staff
